Apple iPhone 5 Launch

Apple last week officially invited members of the media to the event on October 4 when the iPhone 5 announcement is expected. The invite simply says "Let's talk iPhone", along with four iOS icons depicting the date, time and location of the venue.

We're also expecting Apple to announce the iOS 5 operating system, which includes several improvements to Mail and Safari, a notification centre similar to Android's, Twitter integration and iMessage, an instant messaging platform for iOS devices. iCloud, Apple's cloud storage solution is also integrated in iOS 5, so you can re-download purchased music, apps or books to any of your devices or computer, while the master copy resides with Apple.

iPhone 5: when will the iPhone 5 launch?

Internet rumours have long been rife as to the specification and release date of Apple's next smartphone. Reports suggest that delays in the production process have seen the launch date set back by one or two months to October or even November, with a representative from high-street phone retailer Phones4U climing as far back as May that the device would be released in the UK on November 21.

Meanwhile, analyst Chris Caso, of Susquehanna Financial, said "Our checks at multiple levels of the supply chain point to a one- to two-month delay in the production start for the next-generation iPhone vs our earlier view of a July production start.

"Given past history requiring at least two months of production to build inventory in advance of customer shipments, we believe that would point to delivery to customers no earlier than October/November."

All that said, if Apple follows the iPad 2 model of releasing a product 10 days after the announcement, expect the iPhone 5 on October 14.
iPhone 5: specifications

We're expecting an all-new device  called the iPhone 5, with a tear-shaped design, a metal back and a slimmer body. It's also possible we'll se the iPhone 4S: a device that looks identical to the iPhone 4, but with improved specifications.

We expect the Apple iPad 2's A5 dual-core processor to make its way to the new iPhone. There'll also be more RAM and a higher-resolution camera, possibly 8 megapixels.
